Pet Insurance vs. Out-of-Pocket Calculator Methodology
This page explains how the calculator compares pet insurance premiums, deductible and reimbursement assumptions, annual coverage limits, routine care, emergency scenarios, and paying vet bills out of pocket with a dedicated vet emergency fund.
What this calculator estimates
The calculator estimates total pet insurance cost and total out-of-pocket vet costs across the selected planning horizon. The insurance path means paying premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and uncovered costs. The out-of-pocket path means skipping insurance and using savings to cover routine care and emergency vet bills. The calculator estimates how each path may perform under different emergency scenarios, without saying which option is best for everyone.
How pet insurance premiums are modeled
Annual premiums start with the monthly premium multiplied by 12. The calculator then applies the entered annual premium increase percentage each year and multiplies premiums by the number of pets.
annualPremium = monthlyPremium * 12 * (1 + increaseRate) ^ (year - 1)How deductibles and reimbursement rates are handled
The annual deductible resets each year. Eligible accident and illness costs are reduced by the deductible, then the reimbursement percentage is applied to the remaining eligible amount. Deductibles and annual limits are multiplied by the number of pets for this simplified multi-pet estimate.
How annual coverage limits are handled
If unlimited annual coverage is off, the reimbursement for eligible accident and illness costs is capped at the entered annual coverage limit. If unlimited annual coverage is on, the calculator does not apply that cap.
How wellness coverage is handled
If wellness coverage is included, the calculator adds the wellness monthly cost to premiums and estimates routine care reimbursement up to the wellness annual reimbursement limit. Wellness reimbursement is kept separate from accident and illness reimbursement.
How routine vet costs are modeled
Routine vet care, vaccines and preventives, dental care, and medications or supplements are summed each year. The routine cost increase percentage is applied over time. Routine care is only counted as insurance-eligible if you mark it as eligible or if wellness coverage reimburses a portion of routine costs.
How emergency and chronic care scenarios are modeled
Scenario costs are added in the selected year for one-time emergency bills. Chronic and custom scenarios can also add recurring annual illness costs starting in the year you enter. These scenarios are planning assumptions, not predictions of your pet's future health.
How the out-of-pocket path is modeled
The out-of-pocket path starts with current pet savings, adds the monthly contribution each month, and applies monthly APY compounding when enabled. Routine care and emergency vet costs are paid from the savings balance. If costs exceed the available savings balance, the difference is recorded as a shortfall.
balance = balance * (1 + APY / 100 / 12) + monthlyContributionHow the recommendation is calculated
The calculator compares total out-of-pocket vet costs with total insurance cost, including premiums, wellness premiums, and unreimbursed vet costs. If the difference is within the close threshold, the result is labeled close. Otherwise, it says insurance may help or the out-of-pocket path may work based on the modeled costs.
What is not included
This calculator does not include exact policy eligibility, waiting periods, pre-existing condition exclusions, breed-specific underwriting, claim denials, exact veterinary pricing, tax effects, or professional veterinary, legal, insurance, or financial advice.
